Local council moves 9 servers from Veeam to managed backup — thousands saved, rack cleared.
An Australian local council replaced its on-premises Veeam setup with the managed Backup Experts service, migrating nine production servers and removing two physical backup servers from the rack. The move cut thousands of dollars in annual licensing and hardware maintenance while moving every copy into immutable Australian datacenter storage.

The challenge
The council ran nine production servers protected by on-premises Veeam. Per-instance licensing renewals, two dedicated backup servers, and ongoing hardware maintenance were consuming budget and rack space.
They wanted a simpler, managed backup service with immutable copies, clear recoverability, and the ability to demonstrate data protection to auditors and elected members.
The outcome
- Thousands of dollars saved annually on Veeam licensing and hardware maintenance
- Two backup servers removed from the rack
- All nine servers protected with daily immutable snapshots
- Primary and replica copies held in Australian datacenters
- Automated restore verification every two weeks
How the migration ran
- 1
Discovery
We audited the nine on-premises servers, existing Veeam jobs, retention rules, and the two backup servers in the rack so we could plan a clean migration and decommission.
- 2
Deploy
Agents were installed on each server and initial seed backups completed to Australian datacenters, then copied automatically to a separate immutable storage array.
- 3
Decommission
Once backups were validated, the two legacy backup servers were removed from the rack and Veeam licensing was retired — freeing floor space and budget.
- 4
Verify
Automated restore and verification jobs now run every two weeks, with results reported to the council IT team. Backups are only useful if they can be recovered.
